Corfu (Kerkyra) is one of many Greek islands with plenty of history that can be linked as far back as Greek Mythology. The Greek name of Kerkyra derived from two powerful water symbols, one mythological Nymph called Corcyra, a daughter of the river god Asopos, Corcyra was captured by the god of the sea Poseidon who brought her here and ultimately gave her respective name. Throughout history, the island has witnessed many battles and conquests. Corfu is located in the northern Ionian Sea towards the Adriatic and is the second largest of the Ionian Islands while nestled in between the Greek mainland and Italy. Corfu has received most of its influences from western cultures throughout its long history and is one of the first Greek islands to witness an influx of tourists. You will also find small satellite islands which forms the northwester most part of Greece. Corfu is about 40 miles long and roughly 20 miles wide with a population of over 102,000. The highest accessible point (preferably by small car) is Mount Pantokrator (2785 ft) which offers amazing views for most of the island which is dominated by olive trees.
The most notable in the old town of Corfu are the old and new medieval fortresses that date back to the 15th century (Old Fortress added in 2007 to the UNESCO World Heritage Monuments along with the old town). In every corner you will find harmony through the narrow paved roads/lanes and alleys which incorporate buildings that resemble the history and characteristics of Venetian, French, and British influences all while passing the unique and extended touristy shops. Iconic Liston is focal meeting point for social gatherings. Happy vibes are sure to follow. Spianada is absolutely lively and considered to be the center of Corfu and one of the largest squares in the Balkan area.
Corfu has 15 municipalities and countless old villages with stone paved homes. You can also find many churches, museums, lagoons, caves, and breathtaking architecture along with stunning beaches. Corfu town is one of the most popular Easter destinations in Europe where tradition allows fairly large pots to be thrown from balconies in an effort to eliminate bad spirits.
Corfu is accessible by direct flights from most European countries and by daily ferry connections from either the Greek mainland or many nearby Italian ports.
Corfu has an ideal climate making it enjoyable throughout the year. Winter is relatively mild with temperatures reaching around 45 degrees Fahrenheit to around 68 (7 - 20 C). Excursions during this time are highly recommended. Spring offers a vast array of radiant landscape and stunning scenery. Summer sizzles and so does the island as everything comes alive. Superb beaches, traditional festivals, daily trip excursions, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Life is fabulous in Corfu!!!

Green Buses

Green buses are not necessarily green. When waiting at any particular bus stop, keep a look out. Some areas don’t have any benches or designated enclosures. So it is wise to wave down the approaching bus. Make sure the driver acknowledges your company otherwise it will continue without stopping. In some towns, you will only see a small time table which is generally attached to a pole. Prices vary. For example: riding from the north of the island to the town is 4 Euros ($4.50) per person one way. The busses are very comfortable and are equipped with WiFi, air conditioning, armrests, footrests, overhead and belly storage, seatbelts, reclining seats, seat trays, tinted windows, and emergency exits. They do not have toilet access so make sure to use one before boarding. Many journeys are short but some can take about 2 hours.

The main bus terminal is about a 10 minute walk to the airport. It has been recently relocated to a more desirable facility. It is now in close proximity to Lidl which is a highly popular German shopping center which also provides fresh pastries. They do accept cards and no membership is needed.

Corfu Airport

Corfu (Ioannis Kapodistrias) International airport is located at a strategic and beautiful location of the island. The airstrip is small compared to others but skilled pilots are able to navigate the plane safely in and out of Corfu. Stunning views above ground are guaranteed when arriving via plane. The airport is simple to navigate around. Once you arrive and are safely off the tarmac, the baggage reclaim is immediately accessible upon entering the airport. After retrieving your luggage you can make your way out towards the arrival gate and either book a car or proceed outside to the taxi station. Both taxis and buses are stationed directly outside.
Parking at the airport is offered alongside the curb and also at the far end where you can pay to keep your vehicle secured. First 20 minutes are complimentary (This area is currently under construction).
A handful of hotels are within walking distance of the airport.
Flights during the summer months are generally around the clock.
Coffee shops and small convenience stores are available before checking into your flight.
If you arrive early and are bored and would like to kill time, visit Kanoni which is about 10 minutes away (with a taxi) and offers amazing views of incoming and outgoing planes.

Explore one of the greenest islands in Greece. Due to its close proximity to Europe, Corfu is regarded as one of the first islands that opened to tourism. When exploring the island during the hot summer months of July and August, due remember to protect yourself from the extremely torturous sun. It does get really hot and you definitely feel the heat mixed with high humidity. Make sure you have proper shoes or comfortable and sturdy sandals as some areas have uneven rock formation or some may even be damp and slippery. Always put on sun-block and maybe even use an umbrella if necessary. In some areas, you will need mosquito repellant because you will be bit during the day, yes it is annoying but luckily there are no sand flies on the island. Water is essential as you are sure to dehydrate rather quickly, even at night. Always keep exchanged cash with you as some destinations require an small entrance fee.
